Travis was at work clearing debris from the street when he was hit by a car going 30 mph. He was dragged for more than 25 feet.
Travis suffered multiple catastrophic injuries, including: diffuse closed head trauma, multiple sever lacerations and deep cuts, fractured left femur, a shattered left kidney, splenic and colon lacerations, and hemorrhagic shock. Travis’ attending physicians estimated it would take 18 months to maximize his recovery; they did not think he would ever live independently.
Travis’ case was referred to Paradigm 12 days after his injury, and Paradigm Medical Director Dr. Diemha Hoang took charge of his care. She oversaw multiple surgeries to address his many and diverse injuries, including ongoing plastic surgeries to address his facial deformities.
Throughout his long, difficult recovery and his many hospital stays and surgeries, his wife and mother were almost constantly at the bedside. Paradigm’s biopsychosocial approach gave Travis and his entire family the support they needed to heal. And Travis proved to be a strong fighter. He was committed to his rehabilitation and worked hard with the therapists. He was discharged from acute rehab to home at a modified independent level. Once there, he was still having challenges with executive functioning, and he could not sustain his employment. Paradigm continued to work closely with Travis and his family throughout this challenging time, and by the time he completed it, he was showing remarkable signs of improvement in both physical and cognitive function.
Thirty-six months and 77 providers later, Travis returned to full-time employment. Counseling saved his relationship and family, and today he lives with his wife and their young children at home with no additional support. Travis enrolled in college courses at West Los Angeles City College, and he says it feels good to be back to his “normal life,” going to the gym on a regular basis, an important part of his pre-injury life he never imagined he’d be able to reclaim.
Because Paradigm puts the family at the center of the care plan, we were particularly happy to get the news that he and his wife were expecting baby number three just as Travis’ contract was ending.
