Brain Injury Awareness Month—Residential Care in Post-Acute Brain Injury Treatment

As Paradigm continues to support Brain Injury Awareness Month, we’ve been highlighting the work our experts are doing to advance the state of care in brain injury treatment.

Paradigm’s care management experience with acquired brain injuries (ABIs) has taught us there is an immense psychological component inherent in these types of injuries. For injured workers with an ABI, the post-acute care phase represents a critical aspect of the recovery story. The ability for patients to tell their story is an essential part of their recovery, and it is why Paradigm supports the 2021 theme for Brain Injury Awareness Month, “More Than My Brain Injury.”

Because these injuries often require extended residential care due to their severe nature, let’s take a closer look at the standards and expertise required for successful outcomes in this phase.

Acquired brain injury post-acute care
In workers’ compensation, the treatment of ABI in post-acute care management presents some of the most challenging and complex cases the Paradigm team encounters. For injured workers and their families, brain injuries are nothing short of life-altering, and the barriers to care can be substantial.

Whenever an ABI post-acute care case is referred to Paradigm, our team performs a thorough interdisciplinary review of the patient’s health history and prior plan of care. In many cases, these injuries require the specialized and continuous attention that only a residential facility can provide. In these situations, specialized centers can help to ensure that injured workers who have suffered an ABI receive the highest level of skilled treatment required for the best possible outcome. This is why Paradigm partners with ABI residential care providers that meet the highest standards for the injured workers we help.

How brain injury centers support positive ABI outcomes
Paradigm partners with more than 70 brain injury treatment providers across the country and the care continuum. These include inpatient rehabilitation hospital neuro-rehab centers, residential brain injury centers, and intensive home health cognitive rehab services. ABI patients in a post-acute care setting often require around-the-clock care and monitoring. Such care includes, for example, skilled therapy services, specialized therapy interventions for sensory rehabilitation, restorative nursing services, and overall protective oversight management.

Accreditation that represents the highest level in ABI residential care
We’re proud to hold our clinical partners in ABI post-acute care to the highest standards of accountability in order for each of our injured workers to achieve the best possible outcome level. Paradigm works exclusively with accredited facilities and also fosters close clinical relationships with accrediting organizations.

Our highly regarded post-acute care network partners consist of providers with exceptional levels of accreditation. These accreditations include Joint Commission accreditation, Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities accreditation, as well as a commitment to Brain Injury Association of America staff certification and care delivery best practices.
