Celebrating Nurse Appreciation Week with a Focus on Education and Collaboration

Every year, the American Nurses Association recognizes May 6-12 as National Nurses Week, which culminates to honor the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale who was an English social reformer, statistician, and the founder of modern nursing. This year, Paradigm is celebrating our nurses with a focus on appreciating, acknowledging, and investing in the irreplaceable work they do for the injured workers and their families that we serve.

The many patient recoveries that our Paradigm Network Managers and Case Managers navigate day in and day out present unique challenges that require deep clinical expertise and the dedication to ensure exceptional care. At Paradigm, we are fully committed and devoted to ongoing training and education for our entire national nursing team to ensure we deliver the best possible outcome for injured workers and their families.

Ongoing investments set Paradigm Network Managers and Case Managers apart
Paradigm nurses are among the most carefully trained in the industry. We recruit those nurses with the right set of skills and experience—and those who can provide a solid system of knowledge and support to build upon. Each year, our nurses attend a national summit that offers access to clinical thought leaders and continuing education credits. In addition, Paradigm provides continuing education training programs and webinars on relevant injury areas that leverage the expertise of our clinical partners and Paradigm Medical Directors. Paradigm nurses also have access to real time clinical updates that provide insights for the core diagnoses they encounter.

For a firsthand look on being a Paradigm nurse, we recently spoke with Alexa Reyes, who has been a Paradigm Network Manager for three years. She has been recognized for her hard work and high performance scores on client feedback surveys which included comments about her dedication to providing the best possible outcomes to injured workers.

From intensive care to case management, combining key aspects of nursing
Alexa transitioned to the nursing field from veterinary science after realizing the impact her skills could have on people in need. “After graduating from the nursing program at Villanova University, I almost immediately went into intensive care unit (ICU) burn trauma. It really was my heart and soul as a nurse,” explained Alexa. “Although these injuries bring tremendous sadness, there is also incredible joy seeing these patients succeed and recover.”

The next step in her nursing path took Alexa into case management, where she found a field she connected with in new ways. “As someone who loves being organized, case management allowed me to put these skills to work in a way where I thrive,” she said. “Case managers often work independently, so it’s essential to be a self-starter and be able to motivate yourself.”

When she was presented with the opportunity to apply for a Paradigm Network Manager position, Alexa instantly saw how much she could bring to the role through the perfect combination of her ICU background and case management skills.

Finding a culture of support, collaboration, and education
From the beginning, Alexa felt at home as a Paradigm Network Manager. “The culture is incredible; it’s so healthy, it’s so collaborative,” she said. “If you need help, no one hesitates to offer it. You don’t even have to ask.” Alexa explained that deep support comes from the entire medical team in addition to the nurses. “Paradigm Medical Directors are always a great asset, especially if you are dealing with a case in a specialty you have less familiarity with. They really just jump right in to help you out.”

Alexa also highlighted the extensive resources in place to help build expertise in the core diagnoses in catastrophic workplace injuries, including multiple trauma, burns, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and limb loss. Network managers must keep up with best practices to ensure outcomes in these cases. Whether it’s continuing education or the practicum we complete, it absolutely sharpens your clinical knowledge so you can do your job even better.”

Ultimately for Alexa, the rewards of being a Paradigm Network Manager are consistently met by a culture that offers the support she needs. “You always feel part of a team and fully supported. I truly believe it’s an approach that leads to better outcomes for injured workers, because everybody has the same goal.”
