For children of parents suffering from complex medical issues, the dream of a college education can be difficult to achieve. Understanding the financial burdens of the severely injured and their families, Paradigm Outcomes is a proud sponsor of the Kids’ Chance of America scholarship program. Thanks to the support of many, Kids’ Chance helps ensure that children in these families have the means to make their dreams of higher education come true. Jessica L. is one of those success stories.

Jessica L. is now a third-year student at West Chester University. A little more than six years ago her father suffered a severe workplace injury. His traumatic brain injury left him incapacitated, living in a long term care facility and unable to work again. His dream was to put Jessica and her older sister—a Temple University graduate—through college, but the loss of income stemming from his injury challenged the family’s financial stability

Thanks to scholarships from Kids’ Chance of Pennsylvania and the ACE Charitable Foundation grant, Jessica—a dual major in Early Grades and Special Education—is able to attend college and will graduate in spring 2015. Meeting degree requirements involves travel to observe local classrooms and preparing for her own students one day by buying books and supplies. This is a costly endeavor, one that Jessica would have struggled with were it not for these scholarships.

As she approaches the end of her undergraduate college career, Jessica has built a resume that includes involvement in the Council for Exceptional Children, a student club that supports special needs children. She is also involved with Habitat for Humanity, which builds and provides homes for needy families in the West Chester community.

Kids’ Chance of America’s mission is to help the children of workers who have been severely injured or killed on the job achieve their goals of a higher education. Since its inception 26 years ago, Kids’ Chance state organizations have collectively awarded more than 3,000 scholarships, totaling close to a whopping $9 million in scholarship funds.
