Paradigm Medical Directors Convene to Amplify Clinical Excellence in Care Management

Kevin Turner, CEO, Catastrophic Care Management; Suzy Kim, MD, 2019 Horizon Award recipient; Michael Choo, MD, Paradigm Chief Medical Officer

Paradigm Catastrophic Care Management Medical Directors traveled from all parts of the country to Walnut Creek, California, for their bi-annual conference last weekend focused on clinical excellence in care management.

The world-renowned experts in catastrophic injuries – major burns, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury and multiple trauma – shared knowledge of their specialties, learned about Paradigm’s current initiatives and innovations, and updated their data analytics skills.

Paradigm CEO John S. Watts, Jr., welcomed the group.

“Being here with all of you reminds me why I love this company so much. The work you all do is the energy that drives the company,” Watts said. “It takes a village for us to have the successful impact we have on these unexpected, catastrophic situations. That village starts with clinical expertise.”

Kevin Turner, Catastrophic Care Management CEO, emphasized that Paradigm manages more catastrophic cases per year than anyone else in workers’ comp.

“It’s all we do,” Turner said. “And we’re successful because we have a profoundly different approach.”

Paradigm addresses only the most challenging and expensive catastrophic injuries, creating financial value and certainty and returning the injured worker to the best possible life.

We do this by embracing the family and injured worker through this powerful network of expert clinicians, proprietary outcome based analytics, and a decades-proven approach to delivering value based care.

Hosted by Michael Choo, MD, Paradigm Chief Medical Officer, the educational event explored various aspects of its theme: “Clinical Excellence in Care Management.” From identification of crucial variables that impact clinical severity profiles for each of Paradigm’s catastrophic diagnostic conditions, to roundtable discussions and a critical examination of the value of clinical guidelines. Sessions were interactive and enlightening.

Nancy Mann, MD, who specializes in traumatic brain injury and neuro-rehabilitation, said she has learned more working with Paradigm than in any other job: “With the varied backgrounds and knowledge of each team, I always learn something I didn’t know before.”

What really sets Paradigm apart, says Dr. Mann, who has been with Paradigm since 1998, is that “We do whatever needs to be done, to get the patient and family back on track. We think outside the box, including working with Kids’ Chance of America, to look after children of workers affected by these injuries.”

Kathy Galia, Chief Operating Officer of Paradigm Catastrophic Care Management, highlighted Paradigm’s human-centered, outcomes-driven approach. She said the medical directors’ focus on restoring injured workers to their fullest reintegration with family and community personifies the adage: “A good clinician treats the injury. A great clinician treats the person with the injury.”

At the awards dinner, Dr. Choo honored outstanding performance with Impact Awards:

  • Milton Thomas, MD – Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Pamela Ballard, MD – Spinal Cord Injury
  • Gary Clark, MD – Multiple Trauma
  • Jeffrey Saffle, MD – Major Burns

The Horizon Award, commending a Paradigm Medical Director with fewer than five years with the company, was given to Suzy Kim, MD, who specializes in spinal cord injury cases.

Thanks to this unparalleled team of specialized physicians who put injured workers and their families at the center of the care plan throughout the recovery journey until the guaranteed outcome is achieved.
