Case management

Q&A with Paradigm’s New Senior Vice President of Case Management,
Elizabeth Ulloa Lowry

The work our case managers at Paradigm do is essential to helping injured workers get back to their families, communities, and jobs. We have always distinguished ourselves as a care management organization through exceptional case management. And we are confident it will continue to be at the core of Paradigm’s ongoing growth.

Through the recent addition of Elizabeth Ulloa Lowry as Senior Vice President of Case Management Solutions, Paradigm is more committed than ever to innovative case management solutions, both in our own suite of services and across the industry as a whole.

We recently sat down with Elizabeth for a broader understanding of her background, her approach to case management, who she is as a leader, and what drew her to Paradigm. As Elizabeth joins Paradigm’s team, she does so with excitement for the opportunities ahead and immense respect for the high caliber case managers she is working with.

Tell us about your role in the organization and the opportunities you see for advancing Paradigm’s case management services?
Elizabeth: In this role, I’ll be working with Paradigm’s Clinical Solutions leaders to ensure that our already exceptional case managers have the focused guidance and resources to continue delivering extraordinary outcomes. We have really exciting plans to innovate our case management model in a way that fits the wonderful and rich history of Paradigm.

Since starting here, I continue to be impressed by all the great work being done and the depth of clinical and vocational talent we have. Together we will explore how we can take that expertise to the next level with the ultimate goal of improving more injured workers’ lives.

You originally started your career in higher education administration. What did you learn there and how did you transition into the workers’ compensation field?
Elizabeth: I spent over 13 years in higher education administration, first developing a program in the College of Business Administration at the University of New Orleans. I was hired to help launch a new product, the Executive MBA Program. This was a graduate level program designed for full time working professionals and executives to learn every aspect of managing a business. We later added a Healthcare Management degree and satellite programs in Jamaica and Puerto Rico.

In 2008, I became the Chancellor’s Chief of Staff, overseeing operations, marketing, and finance for the entire university. Education administration taught me so much, providing me with a well-rounded set of skills and a deep appreciation of the importance of collaboration. To this day, I still keep a foot in education by teaching Marketing as an adjunct instructor at Tulane University in New Orleans.

A little over 10 years ago, I was offered an opportunity at CorVel Corporation, a third party administrator for risk management solutions focused on workers’ compensation. Despite my lack of experience in comp, they were seeking someone with an entrepreneurial spirit, who had proven success in both operational service delivery and business development. More importantly, they were looking for someone who could provide some new energy and excitement and build both the team and the brand.

After a decade in the industry and serving as Area Vice President for their southern district, I’m very proud of what we accomplished as a team. Personally, I’ve gained a top-to-bottom understanding of every component of the workers’ compensation continuum. From intake to medical and vocational recovery, I’ve been able to see things from the perspective of payers, employers, claims administrators, brokers, case managers—and certainly injured workers. And by serving on the Board for the Louisiana Association of Self-Insured Employers (LASIE) I was able to collaborate with some of the most talented and caring people in the field.

How did you learn about Paradigm, and what attracted you to this company?
Elizabeth: I first heard about Paradigm in my previous role. A large number of organizations work with Paradigm on the risk transfer side, so I quickly became familiar with the care management model and the ability to guarantee outcomes. I repeatedly saw the quality of service and the passion of the individuals, including the case managers, at Paradigm.

Paradigm is undoubtedly a company with a very deep rooted mission and a clear sense of purpose. In my first month, I have seen what a strong culture Paradigm has and it’s one that I’m very excited to be part of and build upon.

I also really admire Paradigm’s efforts to promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace. As a Cuban-American who spoke Spanish before I learned English, I appreciate the importance and value of integrating different backgrounds and viewpoints. Growing up, my parents emphasized values of hard work, education, and integrity. Those are the core principles that shaped who I am as a human being.

What is your approach to leadership and how has your full background shaped the way you interact with teammates?
Elizabeth: Above all, I feel that authenticity in a leader is very, very important. We all deserve to be heard, to be appreciated, and have the space and trust to be ourselves. When you bring diverse viewpoints and ideas to the table, the end result is always better. I think the “secret sauce” is to create an environment that allows us to be open and collaborative–with people that have compassion and always strive for excellence. If we all work toward that goal, with intention every single day, imagine what we will be able to accomplish together.
