Response to COVID-19: Orthopedic and Spine Providers Update

Since our last communication, the landscape of the coronavirus pandemic has changed dramatically related to the re-opening of our national economy and individual business segments. As such, Paradigm Specialty Networks will continue to provide actionable, operational insights to our clients and the workers’ compensation industry.

Key stats

  • 50 states open for elective surgery
  • >90% of orthopedic network partners operating at 75%+ capacity
  • 43% increase in scheduled surgeries (June)
  • 64% of new patients being seen in June, and 98% being seen no later than July

National outlook and confidence

A potential second wave of COVID-19, coupled with another round of orthopedic surgery suspensions, remains a possibility. However, the strict prohibition of elective surgeries has lifted in all 50 states, in accordance with CDC and state-appointed guidelines.

Priority scheduling rebound success

Paradigm is pleased to report that a vast majority (>90%) of our orthopedic practice partners and in-network ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) are operating at 75% capacity or higher. Our partner practices and ASCs have taken every precaution to minimize infection risk by implementing high standards for patient protection, utilizing social distancing measures, screening for COVID-19 pre-surgery, and deploying telehealth when possible.

“We have reopened all clinics and service lines,” said Dr. Christopher E. Baker with Florida Orthopaedic Institute, a Paradigm Specialty Networks provider. “At our surgery center, we are back at full capacity, including all elective surgery. We have seen strong numbers both in the clinic and the surgery center in the first month since reopening.”

Operationally, backlogged demand has been a key driver for the 43% surge in our scheduled surgeries thus far in June. We are also securing appointments at pre-pandemic turnaround times, with 64% of new patients receiving June appointment dates and 98% being seen no later than July.

 Provider reaction

“We are confident that, as long as infection rates in local areas remain without excessive growth in the coming weeks and months, we will be back to normal levels. Our staff and our patients have been extraordinary in their efforts to comply and/or exceed all federal, state and local guidelines as well as health safety standards,” said Dr. Christopher E. Baker, Florida Orthopaedic Institute.

Operational readiness and expertise

While regularly speaking with our provider partners, it is widely evident that there is a high degree of preparedness and energy to get injured workers back on their paths to treatment. We are encouraged by safety measures that have become “business as usual” standards. As further updates become available, we will communicate them swiftly and encourage your continued use of our first-in-line referral program for orthopedic and spine care needs.
