Complications with Multiple Trauma

Accidents don’t always affect only one body part or organ. Multiple trauma is a diagnosis for when a person’s injuries affect many of the body’s systems at once—musculoskeletal, neurological and psychological. Car accidents, falls, crush injuries and explosions are typically associated with multiple trauma. While these injuries only make up 20% of trauma cases, multiple trauma claims are highly complex and more difficult to treat than discrete injuries.

According to government statistics, 61% of all deaths from trauma are due to multiple trauma injuries. The severity of these injuries can lead to ongoing complications such as:

  • Chronic pain
  • Addiction issues
  • Difficult residential and community reintegration

A multiple trauma incident can require extensive medical treatment and attentive medical management. Achieving the best outcome depends on four main factors:

  • The quality of the trauma center
  • The skill and experience of the surgeons
  • The intensity and quality of the rehabilitation
  • Knowledgeable coordination of multiple specialties and services

Due to the many body systems involved, it is common to have multiple specialists participate in the care process. It is especially important, therefore, to carefully coordinate the medical care and manage information transfer during handoffs.
