Business Insurance Up Close with Paradigm Catastrophic Care Management SVP Don Munkwitz

Business Insurance

NAME: Don Munkwitz

NEW JOB TITLE: Tampa-based senior vice president, strategy and execution, Paradigm

PREVIOUS POSITION: Tampa-based principal, Canon Group

INDUSTRY OUTLOOK: The COVID-19 pandemic has obviously had an impact on many businesses and the economy as a whole, and although the trajectory is heading back to normal, the timing and long-lasting impacts are difficult to assess. Many clients and business partners in our supply chain have been significantly impacted, the extent to which is still being determined. In addition to the COVID-19 crisis, longer term, more systemic changes in the health care industry and government policy are likely to have major impacts that will need to be addressed. These changes present risk, but also opportunity for the companies that can plan and adapt to whatever direction these external forces drive the market.

GOALS FOR NEW POSITION: Developing and executing a comprehensive and consensus strategy to achieve our vision of growth and ability to better serve clients and injured workers, all while maintaining true-to-our-core values that have made the company a success and great place to work.

CHALLENGES FACING THE INDUSTRY: The industry continues to face challenges of company acquisitions and consolidations and rapidly changing health care and operational technologies that must be assessed and dealt with to effectively operate in today’s environment. Paradigm is highly nimble with deep clinical expertise across a wide spectrum of solutions and this allows us to continually adapt to new and innovative approaches to address the needs of injured workers.

FIRST EXPERIENCE IN THE INDUSTRY JOB MARKET: My first experience was as a consultant/program manager to implement the order and fulfillment systems and equipment for a home delivery pharmacy and durable medical equipment workers compensation company.

ADVICE: Understand and appreciate the mission and impact you have helping people who’ve had the unfortunate experience of being injured at work, in some cases severely or permanently. The ability to link your day-to-day work with helping others provides a level of motivation and job satisfaction not found in many other industries.
