The brain is one of the most complex organs in the body, and damage can cause a wide range of impairments called Disorders of Consciousness. Impaired consciousness is fluid, which makes it challenging to observe, and opinions among medical professionals often differ. The challenge is to better understand the three main disorders of consciousness and diagnose these dynamic states to apply the right care.
Using case examples, Sunil Kothari, MD, Paradigm Medical Director, and Deborah M. Benson, PhD, ABPP, Associate Vice President, Clinical Services, will discuss determining factors for diagnosis and the inherent difficulty in assessing impairment of fluid disorders of consciousness. They will explore the various treatment options available, explain how Disorders of Consciousness are treated differently than other types of brain injuries, and discuss the importance of educating and supporting injured workers and their families to cope with these devastating injuries.
